Celebrating 90 Years
Griffith Observatory
Griffith J. Griffith first gave Griffith Park to Los Angeles in 1896. In his will in 1919, he left money to build the observatory and the Greek Theater. The Griffith Observatory opened on May 14, 1935. The stately building features the architectural influences of Art Deco Moderne, Greek Revival and Beaux Arts. As it celebrates its 90th year, it continues to be a leader in national public astronomy and one of LA’s most popular attractions. Take a trip there and enjoy the astronomy exhibits, hiking trails and cafe.
Remembering Lynn
St Francis De Sales Grad
I graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School in 1967. It was an all-girl high school with a small graduating class of about fifty students. Since our class was small, we all knew each other by name. As our reunions have come and gone, some of our classmates have passed. This year we lost Lynn (Duvigneaud) Short, a kind and cheerful soul. Some of our classmates, along with her family members gathered to honor her with a Mass of Intention at SFDS Church. It was a heart-felt event that reunited us to mourn and honor her memory. Thank you, Jim, for a lovely reception following the Mass.

Welcome Waves
Wind, Waves and Seagulls
White Point State Beach, CA
When the temp is scorching, it’s time to head to one of SoCal’s cool beaches. On this jaunt to the coast, it was White Point Beach. This beach has a colorful history from its discovery by Spanish explorers around 1770. It has been a Spanish colony, a private land grant concession, a cattle ranch. a lobster and abalone harvest site, and a popular hot springs resort. There are twelve brass plaques throughout the bluff that describe the area’s rich history. In 1978, White Point Beach became part of LA County’s “Federal Lands to Parks” program. A new park complex was dedicated on the site on June 5, 1997. Today it is a great place for a family outing with metered parking, ample restrooms, children’s play area, picnic tables and of course, the outstanding panoramic view.

Movie Time
Lights, Action, Camera!
Corona, CA
Catching up on all the Oscar nominated movies is something my family and I like to do before the awards show. In our area, we have two theater choices and both locations offer senior discounts! So, a favorite pastime is a movie followed by dinner. This year we watched eight out of the ten films nominated for the “Best Movie of the Year.” So, let’s make it 10/10 movies and see if we agree with the Academy’s winner choice.

Be Sweet!
Valentine’s Day
Corona, CA
Although the tradition of writing amorous notes to loved ones has been occuring for over 500 years, the practice is associated with St. Valentine. In the third century there were two Valentines who preached the good word in Rome. One of these two was martyred on February 14, 269, thus giving us the eponymous date. However it was Chaucer who created the connection between love and St. Valentine in his poem Parlement of Foules, lines 309-10:"For this was on seynt Valentines day,/ When every foul cometh to chese his mate.” So however you choose to interpret the day, make it a day to appreciate those you love!
Fiesta Time
Mariachi Minstrel
Corona, CA
Getting ready to see Mariachi Los Camperos triggered a bit of creatve couture. So dressed in black and silver, I felt like one of the performers. The only problem is that I have no musical talent. Oh well, I can dream. By the way, if you want to see Mariachi Los Camperos, they will be at the Fox Performing Arts in Riverside, CA on March 23. So get festive and start tapping those feet!
